Wash machine overflowing

Hello, first our washer was not spinning or draining after the wash cycle, the Just answer repair guy said that it was the lid locking mechanism, so we replaced it, ran washer on small delicate cycle and the washer overflowed with water all over the floor and the water splashed on to the locking system again and fried it... can you please help us? thank you Susan. Could you tell if it overflowed because it filled up with too much water, or because it started spinning while the tub was full of water?

The water just kept on running. No spinning.

How did you get the water to stop? By unplugging the washer? Or turning off the water to the washer?
