Fridge and freezer temps warm and cold

    Model Number: GSL25WGSC BS
    Brand: GE
    Age: 6-10 years

Refrigerator has developed some temperature issues. In the fridge, the bottom is freezing everything and the top is way warmer then normal.
Same with the freezer, the bottom is very cold and the top is too warm. Could it be as simple as a bad circulation fan? I assume there is a fan somewhere.

    Thanks

Yes it could be from a bad evaporator fan motor, that is the fan in the freezer that circulates the air. More commonly on these, we see that it is caused by the refrigerator not going through the automatic defrost cycle. Do you see any frost built up on the lower rear back panel in the freezer section?

Yes, there is frost build up in rear back section of freezer. Should I just power down the whole thing and defrost? Why would the fridge not auto-defrost cycle?

Thank you for the picture. To defrost the freezer, unplug the refrigerator, and use a blow dryer on a low heat setting to melt the ice and frost. Make sure not to get the plastic liner of the refrigerator too hot, as they can melt and warp easily. Once the frost is melted you can put the refrigerator back together and it should start cooling properly again. Over the course of the next few days the frost will start to accumulate again, and it will stop cooling until the automatic defrost problem is fixed.

There are four defrost components on these refrigerators, and any one of these or sometimes more than one of these can cause the refrigerator not to go through the automatic defrost cycle. Make sure the refrigerator is unplugged before working on it. Let me know what you find.

Main Control Board - If the components below check out okay, then replace the main control board.

Defrost Heater - Unplug Refrigerator and disconnect the wires to the defrost heater. Check for continuity.

Defrost Thermistor - Click here for information on how to test the thermistor. We recommend replacing this as a maintenance item even if it checks out okay.

Defrost Thermostat - Unplug Refrigerator and disconnect the wires to the defrost thermostat. Check for continuity while the thermostat is cold (still covered in frost). If it has continuity while it is cold, it is good. If it does not have continuity while cold, it is bad and should be replaced. Also, a visually indication that the defrost thermostat is failing is if the top is raised up. Moisture can get inside the part and freeze which raises the top of it and causes it to fail.

These are the parts for your refrigerator:

    Main Control Board - Part # PD00000994 (mfg # WR55X10942)

    Defrost Heater Assembly - Part # PD00001004 (mfg # WR51X10055)

    Defrost Thermostat - Part # PD00001040 (mfg # WR50X10068)

    Temperature Sensor (Defrost Thermistor) - Part # PD00000992 (mfg # WR55X10025)
