Is there a test to determine if circuit board needs to be replaced? And could there be a surge protector that could be replaced?

It is a side by side refrigerator.
What is the problem you are having with the refrigerator?

It sounds like you might be describing a noise filter? Could you post up a picture of the part?

I got the picture, thanks for posting it. That black module is a capacitor. It looks like it could be a run capacitor for the compressor, if you look at the schematic on the refrigerator you should be able to see what the capacitor is used for. This type of capacitor is not very common to go bad. To test a capacitor you have to use a special multimeter that has the ability to test capacitors.

Thanks for your reply, so I guess my next move is to replace the circuit board and hope that is all the lightning took out?
Have you checked the fuse on the main control board to see if it is blown?

Yes, the fuse on the circuit board is intact. Nothing looks damaged...
Does anything on the refrigerator power up or function? Or is it completely dead?
