Ice maker intermittently works and ice under deli tray

    Model Number: PFSF6PKWBBB
    Brand: GE
    Age: 1-5 years

We have a GE Profile french door fridge with ice in the door. For the past few years the ice maker would intermittently stop working. In order to get it working again we remove the ice bucket/tray and slide it back in. A short while after the unit would start producing ice again, until randomly (could be same day, could be a week) it stops working again.

Another issue (possibly related) is ice under the deli tray. I took the fridge apart ~9 months ago and melted the ice defroster as well as cleared the drainage tube. That seemed to help for 6 months but now the problem is back. Seems unreasonable to have to constantly manually clear the defroster drain tube.

    Any thoughts?

Does the ice maker make any noises when it stops working? Does the defrost drain have a heat probe from the defrost heater going down into the drain?

The ice maker doesn't make any noises when it stops working. It just stops making new ice until it is "reset".

I don't remember a heat probe going from the defroster into the drain.

I would start by checking to make sure the ice maker compartment is getting cold enough. Put a thermometer in the ice bin for about 6-12 hours, the temperature should be below 10 degrees for the ice maker to work correctly. When it stops working is there still ice in the ice maker mold?

In the attached diagram, the drain probe is #30.
