    Whirlpool Duet no start woes

    Model Number: WED9400SZ1
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 1-5 years

Hi Doc, I have read a few post on this site and learned alot, but I feel my situation is slightly different. To start off, my dryer powers up, but pushing the start button makes a click, but doesn't start. Assuming it was a blown thermal fuse (3392519) i replaced it. I read elsewhere that usually the fuse blowing is from a clogged vent or a bad thermistor. Cleaned the vents, but they looked good anyway. So i replaced the thermistor (8577274) as well. Dryer fired up, but after the second load it blew the thermal fuse again. Now here is my main question. Could I have bought a bad (out of the box) thermistor? The reason i ask is because now, after the fact, i am using the multi-meter on the original thermistor and the newly purchased one and both are reading no connectivity (infinite I believe is how you say it). I believe I saw on this site that a good thermistor is supposed to read ~10 ohms. So did I buy a bad thermistor or can something fry it too?

I decided to check a few more things so here are my readings from my currently dead dryer:

    Thermal Fuse: infinite ohms
    Thermistor: infinite ohms
    Thermastat: +/- 2ohms
Thermal Fuse (on element box): +/- 2ohms
    Element: +/- 11ohms
Element vs surrounding box: infinite ohms (no short)

Granted my multi-meter is a cheapo from harbor freight.

Nevermind about the thermister. I am an idiot with multimeters. I had it on a lower setting. I thought it had to be ~10 ohms at 70 degrees not 10,000 so I had it on a lower setting. Now I am just really flustered. Both my new and original thermister are working fine. I double checked the element for shortage but it doesn't appear to be shorting. My vent is clear. What's next to try? The thermostat and the thermal fuse on the element housing? Is it an air flow problem?

Have you checked your venting for any restrictions blocking the air flow? Try running the dryer on an air dry cycle and see if it still heats then.

Definitely no restrictions in the air venting. Turned on the dryer in "air only" mode and it heats up anyway. I checked the element with a multimeter and it does NOT seem to indicate a short to the element assembly housing. Can this still be shorted just not indicating such? I assume at this point it is the control board. Ouch!

You could have an intermittent short, but it is most likely a failure of the control board. If the dryer has been getting that hot, it might be a good idea to replace the heating element anyways. When the element stays on constantly like it has been, it can warp and crack the element which can cause it to fail or short. Let me know how the repair goes for you.

This is the control board and heating element for your model dryer:
