GE Dryer timer won't advance on automatic cycle

    Model Number: DVLR223EE0WW
    Brand: GE
    Age: 1-5 years

I have a GE dryer thats only a few years old, first it started taking a long time to dry and now the timer won't advance on the automatic cycle (it ran for 12+ hours one day). If I put it on the timed dry cycle it works and advances through the cycle. Help me please!

The first thing I would check on your dryer is the heating element. Your GE dryer uses a dual heating element, if one side of the element burns out the dryer can still heat but it won't be able to advance the timer on the automatic cycle. The other things that can relate to your problem would be the thermostats, and a resistor that sits next to the timer.

Let us know what you find.

My husband finally figured out how to get the dryer apart last night. The inner coil on the heating element was burned out. Do you have to replace the whole back part when the element burns out?

If the heating element housing is in good condition then you can use a restring kit for the heating element, that will save you quite a bit of money if you can go that route.

This is the heating element restring kit for your dryer:
