    Hotpoint S/Side Defrost Runs too long

    Model Number: HSS25GFTA BB
    Brand: Hotpoint
    Age: 6-10 years

    I have a Hotpoint {GE} Side by Side model HSS25GFTA BB, and it seems to work fine up till a few weeks ago.

    Now the first symptom was a frozen water dispensing tube. I replaced the water solenoid as I had incorrectly diagnosed the problem. I will sell it cheap to any buyers. I defrosted the tube with a hairdryer and it worked well for a few days then it froze up again.

    Next the Ice {it makes lots of Ice} started freezing together in the Ice dispenser bucket, I have determined that the defroster runs too long and thaws the ice and then it refreezes together.

    could it be the thermistor? Or do I have to do something to properly diagnose the problem part?

    Freezer set to 7 on scale of O=off 9=coldest temp = -20 deg F (approx. as the thermometer does not have graduations below 0)
    Refrigerator set to 5 on same scale temp = 34 deg F

    I have ordered the following parts from the website;

    WR55X10025 Temperature Sensor (Thermistor)
    WR50X10068 Defrost Thermostat

    They were fairly inexpensive. I planned on replacing them before ordering the nonreturnable mainboard to see if they might solve the problem.
    any suggestions?

    Can I have you set the temperature settings for the refrigerator and freezer to the factory middle settings. After changing this, Leave the refrigerator for 24 hours and then measure the temperatures again.

    That is pretty close now, the freezer should be at around 0 and the refrigerator should be at around 37-38.

    I am using a meat thermometer so it could be 36 or so.
    The problem is the freezer goes into defrost mode and apparently stays too long as the Ice in the bucket/tray melts and refreezes. these keeps the Ice maker from dispensing correctly.
    So some threads say replace the "Thermistor" one did say to replace the control panel.
    I now have the two parts I bought from your site;
    WR55X10025 Temperature Sensor (Thermistor)
    WR50X10068 Defrost Thermostat

    is there something I can do to diagnose the problem to see if I should try the control panel?

    Did you replace the defrost thermistor on the evaporator coil?

    Not yet, I will do that and then recheck the temps and start the Ice maker again and report the results in a day or two.
