    Whirlpool Dryer Gets Excessively Hot

    Model Number: LER7648KQ2
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: More than 10 years

Initial indication was a burning smell in the dryer, and the vent into the drum is heat discolored. Dryer door (internal) is too hot to touch. External vent removed for troubleshooting. Dryer has been cleaned. Excessive heat exists regardless of TEMPERATURE SELECTOR.

Replaced the hi-limit thermostat with no change.

Using an infrared (surface temp) sensor:
    - heater coils reach 700 deg
    - measured 300 deg on vent to drum thru top hole of heater column
    - measure at external vent attachment LOW DELICATE 140 deg on cycle, 120 deg off cycle
MEDIUM 144 deg on cycle, 124 deg off cycle

    Heater element measured 10.2 ohms.

Timed Drying intermittent indications on LOW DELICATE:
    - heating during cool down phase at the 4 o'clock position
    - no heat during cool down phase at the 4 o'clock position

Dryer will cycle on and off; I can hear the operating thermostat functioning.

Did you check to see if the exhaust venting going out of the house is blocked or clogged?

Yes. Dryer still gets high temps with vent disconnected. No thermal fuse (this model has 2) has opened.

In order to measure the temperature, you have to measure the air temperature of the exhaust vent air of the dryer. Measuring the surface temperature is not an accurate method to see if a dryer is working correctly.

Exhaust vent ambient temperature with no duct attached:

Timed Drying at these 2 temp settings:
    - Low Delicate - 154 deg
    - Medium - 154 deg

Should the dryer "Low Delicate" temperature be getting as high as the "Medium" temperature setting?

The cycling thermostat is designed to open at 155F and close at 130F for your dryer, so the temperatures that you are receiving are very close to what they should be. The Low temperature setting should be a little bit lower than the Medium setting. The cycling thermostat has an internal heater than is used on the low setting to heat up the thermostat and make it run cooler.

This is the cycling thermostat for your model dryer:
