Maytag will not spin

We have a 27 year old Maytag LA612 (good old friend). It will not spin, the motor is turning. I know because I have the front panel off and can see it, the belts are slipping. I have replaced the belts but still slipping. I can rotate the drum/transmission by hand (it's a little stiff). It fills with water and agitates just fine but when the timer gets to spin the motor turns but the belts burn. I'm a novice but my guess is that the tub bearings are failing and creating too much resistance to allow spin (but seems like I should see same problem in agitate?). Thanks for your knowledge, time and help.

First check to make sure the belt and pulleys are clean and that they do not have anything on them that could cause them to slip. Another thing to check is the motor springs that keep tension on the motor. I have a feeling that you are probably correct and the washers tub bearing and seal might need to be replaced.
