Our GE Profile refrigerator makes a high-pitched humming sound that is quite loud and driving us nuts. We have to put on music if we want to work in the kitchen. Any suggestions?

We will need the model number from the tag on the inside wall of your refrigerator to help you out with this. Also, which area of the refrigerator is the noise coming from?

Behind the refrigerator is a cooling fan called the condenser fan motor and the compressor. Either one of these things could be the cause of the noise. If you pull out the refrigerator and remove the bottom back panel you might be able to better narrow down which part is causing the problem.

The compressor is an expensive repair and it would need to be done by a repair professional. The condenser fan motor is something that can usually be replaced by the home owner, but that depends on your skill level. In most cases if the fan motor is bad the main control board is also bad and will need to be replaced at the same time.
