If the valve is leaking it can not be tightened to fix the problem, it will need to be replaced.

I was wondering if the problem I am having with my Whirlpool washer (model #GHW9150PW0) is also the water inlet Valve. I've noticed over the last few days a small amount of water in the washer the day after using it. I always shut the water off when not using the washer via a device called Leaksmart (which closes the valve with a push of a button). I've also noticed a foul oder when the washer is running but the water in the basin does not seem to be dirty. And even though it appears to be a small amount of water, it soaked up a towel without decreasing the water in the basin. Running a spin cycle did get rid of it though. Thanks for your help.

If the water supply to the washer is turned off, then it would have to be something other than a bad water inlet valve causing your problem. Check to make sure the washer is draining the water properly and that no water is backing up from the drain back into the washer.

Thanks for responding. I actually ran a spin cycle and got all the water out. Since then I've ran 3 loads of wash and the problem has not come back. Very strange.
