Resistance values for a Whirlpool defrost thermostat

    Model Number: W10165425
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 1-5 years

I have a Whirlpool defrost thermostat. At room temperature (70 F) resistance value is 56k ohms. At 0 Fahrenheit it is 56 ohms. It seems to me that at 0 the resistance should be close to 0. Can some one help me with values? Temperature values on the devise are L42-30F.
    Thanks,
    Barney

Also, I checked the defrost heater element and the resistance across the element was 30 ohms.

The readings that you are receiving are not normal. I would replace the thermostat.

    Defrost Thermostat - Part # PD00003442 (mfg # W10165425)

Thanks for your reply. I thought it strange that the resistance of the thermostat is higher than the heater. The device has been in my freezer at 0 degrees for 3 days and the resistance is steadily decreasing...today at 16 ohms. With that much resistance across it I would think it would heat up and shut off.
    Thanks again,
    Barney

If the defrost thermostat has a higher ohm reading like you are receiving then either it has moisture inside of it or the electrical contacts are bad. Either way you should replace the defrost thermostat.
