GE Profile - replace element with higher wattage element

    Model Number: JP930
    Brand: GE
    Age: 6-10 years

I have an older JP930 GE cooktop with a 9/6" burner at 2500 watts. It literally takes forever to boil a large pot of water and considering replacing the element with a higher wattage (3100w) element. Looks like the same configuration for the element as my old one but more powerful to boil water faster. Any reason NOT to do this? Of course, GE states it is never recommended to modify their stuff, but I don't see a mechanical reason preventing me from doing it.

    Thoughts?

Looking up your parts it said that the element is a 2500 watt dual element. Are you sure that both elements are OK?

As far as replacing it with a higher wattage element I would have a few concerns.

    1. Can the ceramic top take the extra heat.

    2. You would also have to replace the infinite switch.

    3. It adds another 2.7 amp draw to the line. I do not know haw much room there is when there is when it comes to amperage.

    4. Can the units wiring take the extra current draw? It increases from about 11.4 amps to 14.1 amps.

    5. If your mod causes a fire, how will this effect your insurance?

I have never done this but would not recommend it.
