Kenmore freezer not getting cold

Kenmore freezer barely gets cold enough to freeze ice cubes in trays ( ice machine no longer produces ice ). Takes 2-3 days
to freeze cubes, though I have it set to coldest-seems to run continuously . Previous food items no longer frozen.Fridge is hovering around 40-42 degrees. Model number-25371822102, over 10 years old. Wondering if I should just tell my landlord that it is time to put it out to pasture or if there is a possible "simple" fix that I might try.

Double check to see if the compressor is running.
Should be warm and you should be able to feel it vibrating.
Check that the condenser/compressor fan is running.
Check that the condenser coils and vents are clean.
If yes (OK)
Remove the cover from the evaporator coils in the freezer so you can inspect them.
Check that the evaporator fan is running.
Be sure the unit has been running a couple hours before doing this. In other words do not do it just after a defrost cycle.
If they are clogged solid with ice and frost you have defrost problem. This should be a relatively inexpensive fix (defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost timer).

If they only have frost in one area, usually where the freon enters the coils you are low on freon and have a leak somewhere.
If no hint of frost or cooling you are either out of freon or the compressor is toast.
Both of the above will be a relatively expensive fix so it usually makes more sense to replace the unit.
