    Freezer problems

    Model Number: rt18bkxkq00
    Brand: Roper
    Age: 6-10 years

My freezer has been icing up and frige is warm.. Every so often i here a clicking noise like it wants to defrost or something but, it just clicks on and off for about 3 to 4 mins.. Then shuts off. The clicking noise is coming from around the control board area.. I had a repairman to come out and he said it was the control board bad so i replaced it and nothing happened any differently.. So the defrost control wasn't bad to begin with.. What could this be?

Did you manually defrost the freezer after replacing the defrost control board. When a refrigerator is having a automatic defrost problem, you will need to manually defrost the freezer to get it caught back up after replacing the bad part.

It is likely that you also have another bad defrost component. Besides the defrost control board that you already replaced, there is also a defrost thermostat and defrost heater in the freezer that could have gone bad (these are both located in the freezer). Do you have a multimeter and knowledge on how to test parts for continuity?

You either need an ohm meter, or multimeter to test the parts. If you don't have one of those, then I would start by replacing the defrost thermostat, because it is much more common on these refrigerators to fail than the defrost heater. Whirlpool forgot to include the defrost thermostat in the parts breakdown diagram, but I think it should use part number 4387490.

The defrost thermostat is located behind the back panel in the freezer section. It is clipped onto the evaporator coil.
