MVWX655dW1 Won't spin upto full speed (slips)

    Age: Less than 1 year

    Model Number: MVWX655dW1
    Brand: Maytag
    Age: 1-5 years

We have a few year old Maytag washer model MVWX655dW1. When it starts to spin dry the clothes the center agitator and drum start at the same speed and as it speeds up, a few seconds in, the agitator continues to speed up but the drum slows back down. You can hear the motor/transmission speed up in revolutions until I guessing here, it hit a revolution limiter and slows down. It repeats this a few times trying to get it the drum up to full speed but it is never is able to. I have looked to make sure no coins, screws, etc. are causing any issue inside the drum/agitator and see no issue. I turned it over to look underneath the machine and notices an oily substance on the belt cover but no oil on the belt itself. I suspect the clutch might be bad but I see not chipped or ground teeth on the clutch kit. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the problem or if I am tracking correctly on the clutch issue?

Hello, did you ever figure out the issue with your washer? This is exactly what we have going on. Any help appreciated!

Yes, it was the clutch assembly, if I remember correctly. It has been fixed for some time now. It didn't cost much to replace it myself but the unit died about six months later and I opted not to spend any more money on the unit. From this experience, I will not be buying Maytag ever again. The unit had multiple issues.
