[FIXED] installing start kit 8201786 Do I need a start relay as well?

    Model Number: ED5FHEXMS10
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 6-10 years

I just received start device kit 8201786. The parts included dont completely match the start relay and capacitor from the refrigerator installed by the factory. Designs change apparently.

So, The instructions identify the start relay (combo direct replacement) which plugs into the compressor with no problem. It seems I'm missing the Run Capacitor - which is the black box attached to the back of my original start relay shown in the bottom center of the photo.

I expect that I need this start relay as well as the replacement start device provided in the kit. do you agree?
What's the part number of the start relay I need?
Can I run the refrigerator with the start relay only and not the run capacitor? I dont think I can.

    thanks
    Mike

    Mike,

The run capacitor will unplug from your old start device and plug into the new one. You will need to read through the instructions to see which of the two start devices included in the kit is compatible with your compressor. EGY80 & EGY90 compressors require different start devices, and they tell you in the instructions how to tell which one is needed.

Thanks Doc Ryan. However, the run capacitor is toasted as well as the start device. I just went back to the site and ordered run capacitor 2169373

Yes, in some rare cases the start device will burn up bad enough that it ruins the run capacitor. Hopefully this gets you up and running.

So I just received the run capacitor, connected it to the start device (for the RY90 compressor) and installed it on the compressor. I did check resistance across each prong of the compressor and did not find any opens between any of the prongs.

Pluged in the power cord and - got nothing. The compressor nor the fan would turn on. The ice maker seems to want to work, the lights inside the fridge go on, but I have no power to the connector at the start device, nor at the fan. I do have 120V from the power cord into the connector that plugs "up" into the right side of the fridge, but nothing out of that connector. I dont even see an access panel to see what's wired up to the other side of that connector.

Im searching for some reset switch at the moment. I dont think there is a control board on this model, is there?

    Any ideas Doc?

Following the schematic in the owners manual I saw that the connector that plugs "up" leads to the thermostat switch and the defrost control board. Looked like the only thing that would allow power to reach the fan and the compressor.
So, I pulled the control board and found that there were some burned out traces on the bottom. The pencil is pointing to them in the photo below. Either the control board took out the run cap & start device, or more probably the start device failed, taking down the run capacitor causing a high current from the defrost control board, causing the traces to burn up. I dont want to repair the traces incase there really is a problem in the defrost control board that will damage the new parts. So, now there's a new defrost control board on order.

    Thanks Doc!

    Mike,

If the start device burned up badly, then it could have damaged the defrost control board. I would take a look at the schematic for the refrigerator and make some more checks. Does the fan inside the refrigerator run?

This is the control board for your refrigerator:

Yes it looks from your picture that it definitely took out the control board by the burn spots.

Either the control board took out the run cap & start relay, or more probably the start relay died, taking down the run capacitor and over drawing current from the defrost control board, causing the traces to burn up.
Yes, your 2nd statement is exactly correct.

Hi, I have a Whirlpool refrigerator model number ED5FTGXKT00 and it stopped cooling. Went to the local appliance place and the sold me a kit, part number 8201786 and then went back to replace the start relay and the parts look different and the wires do not fit on the connectors on the replacement part. Do I need to return the part or is the the correct part. I am attaching a photo.

Hi, I am just following up on my post from last week. Need some advice on the start relay...do I need to start a new thread?

Hi, I just saw your post. I'm not the expert here, but your old parts and new parts obvoulsy look different. I suggest opening a live chat window with the Parts Dr. specialists and they'll find your parts and send you a link to a photo of the new part.

Yes, part number 8201786 is correct for your model refrigerator. You are not using the correct part in the kit for your refrigerator. Your refrigerator will need the small black start relay and small white overload from the kit (read the instruction sheet for which parts to use) as well as the black cover. Those two parts will replace the original single start relay that came from the factory.

ok, thanks...I wondered about that. I will take a look and see if I can figure out which ones I should use. Seems to me there were two of each...The instructions left a little to be desired.

Yep, if you read the instruction sheet it says which of the two parts to use.
