Warning Capacitors contain a lot of electricity and can be very dangerous, they act like a high voltage battery! Also if a capacitor is shorted, it could explode. If you do not have electrical knowledge, you should hire a professional.

To test a start capacitor you will need a multimeter that can measure microfarads (μF or MFD). On the side of the capacitor, it will usually show the rating of the capacitor. It will usually say something like 189-227MFD.

First you will need to discharge the capacitor before removing it. To discharge the capacitor you should set the multimeter to read "volts" and place one probe on each terminal of the capacitor to make a parallel circuit. Hold the leads on the capacitor until the voltage reads zero.

Next, set the multimeter to read capacitance (MFD). Place the one lead on each terminal of the capacitor and the meter should give you a reading after a few seconds. If the reading is within the specifications on the side of the capacitor (XXX-XXX MFD), then the capacitor is good. If not, then it is bad and will need to be replaced.
