    Very slow ice production

    Model Number: GFSS6KKASS
    Brand: GE
    Age: 6-10 years

I finally broke down and bought a new ice maker and that does NOT appear to have fixed the problem. After doing more research I found that the mother boards may need replaced on some models (mine NOT being one of them, according to the article). However, it also said if the board is labeled prior to rev 4.02 it should be replaced.
Mine is labeled 2.02. So, I'm a bit confused, could the mother board be what is causing the slow ice production? Do I spend $200.00 more dollars?
I have attached pictures of the model and serial number tag as well as the mother board. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to clarify the ice maker replacement did NOT fix my problem. Thanks.

Your model number is not coming up as a valid model number. Can you double check it for me please?

    Hello,

I have the similar model, GE GFSS6KKYASS. My first symptom was slow ice production. I then noticed my ice-cream was mushy. This was odd because the freezer temperature reported as -2ºF(I know it is the reading and not the set temperature as I changed the set temperature to confirm.) I bought a thermometer and placed it in the freezer and even thought the refrigerator display reported the temperature was -2ºF the thermometer reported 20ºF. The refrigerator section appears to be working fine and the thermometer reports it is at the set temperature. I then placed the thermometer in my other freezer and it correctly reported 0ºF so I know it is working properly.

You may want to check your freezer temp with a different thermometer as well, since it appears the one (thermistor?) in the freezer may not be correct.

I called a an appliance technician out and he discovered the freezer evaporator coil had an uneven pattern (The top coil was encrusted with ice and the rest had none, I didn't even notice frost) He informed me that I had a sealed system issue and was better off replacing the refrigerator.

I have read this is a telltale symptom of a sealed system failure, but given the odd temperature issue, I was wondering if there is a possibility it is anything else? Also, his initial comment at seeing my refrigerator, "You got one of those fancy ones." made me question his competence.

I'm grasping at straws as I am upset at replacing a refrigerator that's only a few years old

    Thanks for any help,
    Jay

    Jay,

I would contact GE about this problem as many of the GE Profile refrigerators come with a 5 year sealed system warranty. If your refrigerator is less than 5 years old it might still be covered under the manufactures warranty.

Sorry, I didn't even realize that you posted a picture of the model and serial number tag. Your model refrigerator does not need the main control board replaced because of the software version. The first thing that I would check is to see if the temperature in the ice maker compartment is 10F or colder. You will need to put a thermometer in the ice bucket and leave it there for 6-12 hours to get an accurate temperature reading.

    Hi Doc,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this model only has a 1 year sealed system warranty.
The first character in the model number tells us that it's not a Profile unit and the Owner's manual states that only the Profile model gets the 5 year coverage on the sealed system.

Just noticed water leaking from under the unit now. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and spend 2k on a new one.
Looking at the LG LG LFX25974ST as LG has great reviews the past few years and a 10yr compressor warranty.
Defiantly getting a 5 year extended warranty for $150 as the manufacturers warranty on all parts but the compressor is only 1 year.

GE has lost a customer for life and I'll make sure all my friends know as well.

I'm sorry to hear its not under warranty. I glanced at the owners manual for your model refrigerator and I thought I read that it had a 5 year warranty for the sealed system, but I must have misread it or not read all of the details.

We like LG appliances. Each brand has its ups and downs. GE is generally pretty good, but every once in a while you can get a lemon.

I finally got my hands on a freezer thermometer. The temperature in the bucket is 12F. I assume this is not cold enough to allow the ice maker to keep up with demand. Where do I go from here? Thanks.

Most commonly this is caused by a blockage in the airflow from the freezer to the ice maker compartment. The first thing we recommend to do is to unplug the refrigerator and leave the doors open for 24 hours to allow any frost that might have accumulated in the air passage to the ice maker compartment to melt. Try that and let us know if it fixes your problem.
