    Whirlpool Refrigerator

    Model Number: WRS315SDHM04
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 1-5 years

The refrigerator and freezer are not cooling correctly. The refrigerator space is at 51 degrees and the freezer is at 32 degrees. I checked the coils in the front of the unit and they were covered in dust. I vacuumed the dust from the coils and nothing has changed.

    What could be wrong?

    Thanks,
    Charlie

If you pull the refrigerator out and remove the rear cover, is the compressor running?

Does the compressor sound like it is running? You should hear a slight humming sound from it while it is running.

    Hi Ryan,
The compressor is running (vibrating) and it's HOT!

    Thanks,
    Charlie

Is the condenser fan motor next to the compressor running to dissipate the heat?

    Yes.

FYI The only thing that's changed just prior to this problem was a new water filter. I can't see how that could have any effect on the cooling???

The water filter being changed wouldn't relate to your cooling problem. The next thing I would do is remove the lower cover in the back of the freezer compartment to inspect the frost pattern on the evaporator coil. It could be that the refrigerator is not going through the automatic defrost cycle if this coil is full of frost.

Only the two bottom coils have a small amount of frost on them.

It sounds like you might have a compressor a sealed system issue. Can you post a picture of the evaporator coil showing the frost pattern?

Yes, that worked! Since you are only seeing a small portion of the evaporator coil getting cold, that would indicate a sealed system or compressor failure. This type of repair can be expensive and it would need to be done by a professional.
