[FIXED] Whirlpool WED95HEDW1 powers on but won't run

    Model Number: WED95HEDW1
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 6-10 years

I have a Whirlpool WED95HEDW1 that will not run. The panel lights up and I am able to select different dryer modes, but nothing happens when I press the start button. If I don't turn it off, then the timer still counts down, but the motor doesn't make a sound and of course the drum does not turn.

If I have the door open when I press start, it beeps at me to let me know the door is open.

I've disassembled it and checked the heater and blower thermal fuses for continuity, and both are still good.

The belt is nice and tight.

My initial thought is a bad relay, but possibly the motor has failed? Is there anything else I should check?

Here's a video of what it does when I press the Start button.

Just an update, as I was able to fix the dryer.

After reading more things to troubleshoot, I took the top back off of the dryer to test the relay. When I pressed the Start button to start a cycle or the power button to stop it, the relay clicked normally. The next thing I was going to check was the belt switch on the back of the motor. Before I got started dismantling everything again to get to the switch, I saw a post on another forum from someone who recently had the same issue. He recommended removing the control board from the plastic tray/holder and inspecting the bottom. Sure enough that was the issue, as you can see in the photo. A solder for the relay had blown on the bottom of the board. I was able to clean up the board and re-solder where it blew out. We've run a few loads through so far and it seems to be holding, although I ordered another control board to keep on hand if or when this one blows again.

Thanks for sharing what you found! I have updated this to FIXED. Although re-soldering that spot on the control board will usually get it working, it isn't something that I would recommend doing as it can be a fire hazard and it will usually fail again pretty quickly.

Here is a link to the control board for anyone else that needs it.
