GE Monogram builtin damper benc test question

    Model Number: GE_ZISS480DRHSS
    Brand: GE
    Age: More than 10 years

I'm in the process of replacing the evaporator fan motor and was hoping to test the reliability of the associated damper while the box is open and not in service. Here's a photo:

The service manual/documentation suggests that the damper should be activated when the power is restored to the device, but since the evap fan is not working, my local tech suggested that the damper may be ok because the main board did not see a proper response for the fan test. That tech said he did not know how to bench test that fan motor.

Was hoping to find a way to apply battery voltage to the harness to see if the damper functions in both directions; I was able to test the dampers associated with the quick chill bins because they operate more simply and are either all open or all closed based upon the polarity of the voltage being applied. The 4-conductor harness on this item suggests that it can be opened/closed incrementally.

    TIA, Nick

    Hi Nick,

I do not know of a way to bench test these motors. A lot of them run on a PWM DC signal that cannot be easily replicated on a bench. I do know that if you suspect the motor is bad, that you should replace both the motor and the main control board together at the same time as they commonly cause each other to fail.
