Washer is banging and knocking out of balance when in the spin cycle. Please help!

The two most common things that I see cause this are either bad suspension rods or the bearings in the gearcase failing. Does the washer sound noisy during the spin cycle? Do you see any leaking residue on the bottom side of the washer?
