I have a question about a Speed Queen Washer.
We bought it used for my office and it is almost in perfect condition. In fact, when I took the front off it looked practically new as if it had been rarely used.
It really did look almost brand new inside, I was amazed how clean it was , essentially spotless.
I didn’t even need to change the belt.
I believe it was built around 2012.
We bought it and a Speed Queen Dryer for my office and I noticed something odd, or maybe not.
During the agitation cycle the machine makes a mechanical clicking sound, like metal clicking against metal each time the agitator changes direction.
Not loud or obtrusive but you can hear it.
I took the front off and it seemed to coming from the transmission but can’t be sure. The transmission would shift maybe ¼” each way as it agitates.
When I held the transmission still ( with a reasonable amount of effort) the clicking stopped. Also, there is a slight amount of play in the agitator, not much just a tad each way when the machine is off and empty. Actually very little, it just has a little movement in either direction.
It works perfectly without any problems at all, it just makes a light clicking sound as it agitates. I bought my wife the top of the line Speed Queen AWN542 in 2012 ( oddly the same year these were built) but I don’t remember my wife’s doing that at home.
My first thought was there was a little play in the gears of the transmission but if that were the case it would not stop when I held the transmission still.
Bottom line, is this normal and is it anything worth worrying about?
Finally, should the brake pads hold the basket completely still even with heavy loads or should you expect it to shift slightly with the agitator?
I just wish I could figure out where the clicking is coming from regardless of how low the sound is. It can get annoying if you are looking for something to complain about or worry about.
I watched a video about a guy who had one that made a sound like loose change rattling during agitation. His was really loud.
Apparently there are two large washers between the pulley and the brake under the transmission, he separated the pulley from the brake with a crow bar and sprayed the washers with Lithium Grease and it made it completely quiet.
Could those washers be making the clicking sound?
