New Amana Delivered with Dry Roller Bearing

    Model Number: ngd5800hw2
    Brand: Amana
    Age: Less than 1 year

I have noticed that the "change your own rollers" repair videos have started to advise putting some lubricant on the shafts. I never put lubricant on replacement roller shafts of my Speed Queen dryer over its 26 year lifetime. I couldn't afford a new Speed Queen, so I purchased an Amana. Before the 1 year warranty was up the dryer started shrieking. The problem was a RUSTY roller bearing. Is this is a new sign of poor quality control, or worse, the oilite bearings in the rollers are chosen as lowest Chinese quality parts? If so, it makes sense that the repair videos have now started recommending lubrication. The warranty tech used grease. Now I'll find out how long it takes for the grease to pull in enough lint to jam up the dryer. Worse yet, he didn't change the shaft that the rusty roller was grinding down. That's got to also cause trouble.

We are seeing a lot of bad advice being put out on the internet about oiling or greasing the drum roller axle shafts. These axle shafts should NOT be lubricated. They use a self lubricating graphite impregnated bushings which are not designed to be lubricated.

It's hard to say what caused the rust on the original part. To fix your issue, I would replace all of the drum rollers, clean all of the grease off of the axles shafts, and replace any of the axles shafts that are damaged.

Our video below show the proper process on this topic.

These are the OEM Whirlpool parts:

    Drum Roller, Belt, & Pulley Kit - 4392067 (PD00002451)

    Drum Roller Axle (Front) - W10359271 (PD00005738)

    Drum Roller Axle (Rear) - W10359272 (PD00004059)

It's nice to know that no lubricant is needed Unfortunately, until the warranty runs out, I have to accept the repair as performed by the warranty contractor. I have an extended warranty after the Whirlpool warranty runs out. I will then have to accept roller repair as performed by the extended warranty service. There is a maximum dollar amount of repair charges on the extended warranty before I have to pay. If the techs keep on greasing, the machine will probably use up the warranty dollars before 3 years of extended warranty is over. Then I'll have the privilege of doing the repair myself!
