    Kenmore dryer stops

    Model Number: 110.61202011
    Brand: Sears Kenmore
    Age: 6-10 years

Our Kenmore (11061202011) electric dryer quits before the cycle is complete. It is getting heat , but it quits prematurely. If you let it sit and then restart it it runs awhile then again stops prematurely. The timer dial has a Time Dry (High heat), Auto Dry (Low heat) , and Air Only to choose from. My wife uses the Time Dry exclusively. When this issue started we tried the Auto Dry and it does run the full cycle -- but she doesn't like that lower heat setting So, the premature stopping occurs only with the Time Dry setting. I took the back off and found some lint piled up at the low end of the part that the exhaust duct attaches to, but it was not blocking the hole. The lint had piled up only to the bottom of that hole. I removed it and cleaned the whole thing. I also brushed off the blower fan , which had very little lint on it. I'm no dryer repairman, just a homeowner, but I'm "thinking" this is may be a timer going bad -- just my guess. I don't know if this model has a thermostat. Nor do I know if it could be something else. A phone call to Sears Parts said it was the timer. They seemed a bit too eager to sell me a $160 timer. If it is the timer, are the ones on Amazon any good? I'd also like to know the right part number. I need some help, if anyone can help please tell me. I don't want to waste time and money ordering parts that will not fix the issue.

To me it sounds like it might be a failure of the drive motor. The bearings in the motor can start to fail due to age or sometimes lint buildup on the motor. When the motor runs with bad bearings, it eventually overheats and the motor stops due to an internal thermal safety in the motor. Once the motor cools down enough, it is able to start again. To check the motor, you have to disassemble the dryer and try to spin the motor by hand to see if the motor spins freely or not. Please let me know what you find.

As far as buying parts on Amazon, please stay far away from them. Amazon is not a trusted place to buy parts from. Our store https://partsdr.com is a good place to get OEM parts at a good price.

This is the motor and blower wheel for your model dryer. Make sure to buy the blower wheel at the same time as the original one usually needs to be cut off.

    Dryer Blower Wheel - 694089 (PD00002470)

Here is a video show how to replace the motor.

Although I don't think your timer is bad, you can test it as shown in the video below.

Doc Ryan, thank you for sending me the videos. That helps. You may be right, but I'm thinking its the timer since it works just fine on the Auto Dry setting. I will buy a multimeter today and try to test the timer according to the video you shared. If I order a timer and that doesnt solve it can the timer be returned? How does that work?

If the issue only occurs on the one timer cycle, it could be a bad timer causing the issue. We do not accept returns on parts that have been installed. Let me know what you find with the results from testing the timer.

This is the timer for your model:

    OK, will do. Thanks Ryan.
Last two loads of clothes she ran it worked fine, but they were small loads. I have not tested yet because of that. If it acts up again, I'll follow the video for checking the timer and let you know. The multimeter I bought is a GB GDT-311. It does not have the continuity setting. It does have the ohm (with the "horseshoe" emblem, or maybe "headphones-looking" emblem. I think that will work to test continuity.

That multimeter should still work fine, you can use the Ohm setting to test for continuity.

Ryan, I thought I'd let you know since you asked to be updated. The dryer has been working fine. I don't know what the deal is but it has not been stopping mid-cycle like before. If it starts stopping mid cycle again I'll run those tests you sent. So for now I'll just leave it alone. Thanks.
